KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There is good and bad news in the 2025 death statistics in Kalamazoo County.
The overall death rate is the highest it has been since COVID-19 set current records earlier this decade.
Accidental drug deaths are down, but infant mortality has bumped back up after two years of relatively low numbers.
Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner Dr. Patrick Hansma says of the ten infant deaths, one was a homicide and the rest were accidental.
He says the number of cremations continue to rise.
Most of the other statistics were within the norms for Kalamazoo County.
Dr. Hansma says a bit of good news is that the numbers for tissue donations doubled last year.
The Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s office is located at W-Med downtown and now provides post mortem services to 14 counties in the region, including a couple in northern Indiana.
