COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo area animal shelter and adoption program has ramped up a fundraising effort to keep their building open.
For the past three months, Animal Rescue Project has been dealing with a water crisis at their Charles and Lynn Zhang Animal Rescue Center. Executive Director Jack Frost says addressing the crisis will require a $206,000 investment in a sewer line.
The original building at 1616 Construction Drive in Comstock Township was purposed as an auto dealership. Frost says a modest septic tank and drain field were installed to meet the waste water needs of the business.
Because of many loads of industrial-size laundry every day, plus sanitizing dog beds, blankets, and toys, as well as bathing rescued dogs and puppies, their waste water consumption has overwhelmed the septic system, and the Kalamazoo County Health Department has required them to stop doing laundry and bathing.
Volunteers have stepped up to assist with laundry, but Frost says it is not a sustainable solution. Charles and Lynn Zhang have stepped forward with a gift of $100,000, and now they working to match that gift.
