KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The new school year has gotten off to a good start in the Kalamazoo Public Schools, with some good news on reading scores.
Superintendent Darrin Slade reported to trustees last night that the results of last spring’s standardized state reading tests for third graders are back, and the results are very encouraging.
He says they went up in 15 of their 17 elementary schools, some much higher than expected.
That is a much better performance than the M-STEP results statewide, which dropped from 38.9% to 38.2% on average.
Slade says just read the headlines.
Dr. Slade says they were good enough to bring Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other dignitaries to Woods Lake Elementary this week to celebrate the results.
Slade says the results are partly due to an interdisciplinary approach they take to teaching reading, extra support, good teachers and an application of the science of reading.
Trustee Carol McGlinn says that’s very important.
Dr. Slade says scores in third grade reading is an important predictor on how successful students will be going into high school and onto college, and key to making students successful in all subjects.
