MACKINAW CITY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer spent the morning of her final Labor Day as the state’s chief executive taking part in the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority says she led the walk.
An estimated 34,000 people joined Whitmer for the walk this year, which the MBA says was in the upper end for turnout in recent years.
Since 2018, between 21,000 and 35,000 people have walked the bridge every Labor Day.
In a video on social media, Whitmer says she picked the bridge as her logo when she launched her campaign for governor because it’s instantly recognizable and “represents the best of what it means to be a Michigander.”
She says it’s still amazing that union workers and engineers built the five-mile span between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas in just three years and says Labor Day is about recognizing the efforts of people on the job.
