KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The first day of school is just a little over a week away in Kalamazoo County, and Kalamazoo Public Schools trustees are inviting students and parents to the numerous events planned before then.
The goal is to make sure everyone is ready for the first day of school.
This weekend there will be an event at El Consiglio at their headquarters on Millcork.
District spokeswoman Susan Coney says this coming week, every elementary will be holding kick off celebrations and ice cream socials, beginning Tuesday.
Trustee Jennie Hill says those are always fun events.
More community events are planned for next weekend and everything from back-packs to school supplies to haircuts and free physicals for budding athletes are being provided.
The district has hired 60 new teachers, and they began their orientation this week. The rest of the teaching staff will be reporting next week.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says crews have been making building improvements and upgrades all summer.
The first day of school for KPS is Monday, August 31st this year.
