KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller is thanking everyone who came to the aid of a wounded deputy last Friday and chased down the suspect who shot him.
Fuller says Deputy Kaleb Mortimer is facing a serious recovery for a bullet wound to the leg.
He also thanked well wishers who have sent their regards.
28-year-old suspect Jaylen Lipsey, an ex-felon, is being held on one million dollars bond, charged with 14 crimes, including assault with intent to murder, carjacking and various other assault and weapons charges.
Sheriff Fuller thanked all the other police agencies that helped out on Friday.
After the suspect was confronted near the scene of an attempted auto break-in at a Richland garage, investigators say he overpowered the deputy, who was trying to handcuff him, and shot the deputy in the leg wrestling for his service pistol.
They allege he also attempted to shoot the deputy in the head, but the gun would not fire.
Lipsey then sped off in the police cruiser, leading to a wild high-speed chase halfway across the county that ended when the suspect crashed on Lake Street in Kalamazoo.
Lipsey was formally charged on Monday.
