KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This is a dangerous time of the year for youngsters, and the 4th of July is the second most dangerous holiday of the year, ranking only behind Halloween for higher risk of death and injuries to kids.
Traffic statistics show that more teens are maimed or killed in car accidents during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day than any other time of the year.
The biggest risk on Independence Day comes from fireworks.
Kalamazoo Public Schools trustee Takisha Johnson says parents have to pay particular attention and keep track of what their children are up to.
Parents should take the extra step to warn their children about situations they should avoid.
This week, excessive heat may also pose a higher-than-normal risk. Parents should make sure their children are properly dressed and hydrated, and should watch for signs of heat exhaustion, like heavy sweating and dizziness.
They should also have a plan in place, knowing the closest nearest health facility, just in case.
