BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Battle Creek police are putting out a warning about an ongoing phone scam where callers claim to be deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and tell victims they owe money.
The scammers are using names of actual county deputies and caller ID displays what appears to be a legitimate phone number from law enforcement.
They tell people they owe money for expired tickets, missing jury duty, an outstanding warrant, or other issues.
Both the sheriff’s office and the Battle Creek Police Department say they never ask people for payment over the phone or ask for payment by gift cards or cryptocurrency.
Scammers have succeeded at getting at least $20,000 so far.
