KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s like something straight out of 1980s movie “The Breakfast Club,” but when Kalamazoo Public Schools troublemakers meet for Saturday detention later this month, they won’t be dancing on the rails and engaging in shenanigans.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says they are introducing Saturday detention as an alternative to other forms of discipline, like suspension, that many educators say can be counterproductive.
“Instead of student missing school for suspension, we’re utilizing this because we want to keep our students in school.”
These are students who are responsible for disruptive breaches of school etiquette, and get sent to the principal’s office.
It will be up to the officials at their school to decide what’s best.
“The principal still has the option to have an out of school suspension if they feel like it’s needed, and the principal and assistant principal will make the decision.”
Dr. Slade says they plan to hold the Saturday detentions one or two times every month through the rest of this school year, and he plans to lead them himself.
The first one is scheduled for November 21st.
