KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The next step has been taken to enact a moratorium on data centers and other high-tech facilities in Kalamazoo.
The planning commission has agreed with the Kalamazoo city commission to not accept any new applications for permits for such facilities for up to a year.
City commissioner Chris Praedel says the vote was unanimous and came with an additional recommendation on how to study the issue.
Clerk Scott Borling says the city’s Environmental Concerns Committee has also suggested they hand the next phase over to a task force.
The language would put a hold on any new permits for data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, or battery storage facilities until city zoning permits are updated to regulate such new complexes to protect community interests.
