KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo man has been convicted in the shooting death of another man outside a liquor store almost four years ago.
A Kalamazoo County Circuit Court jury Thursday convicted 47-year-old Vernon Phillip Powell of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 28-year-old Aaron Lee Starling outside the On The Rocks Liquor Store on Portage Street near East Crosstown Parkway in the early morning hours of September 3, 2022. Starling was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Powell was also convicted of two counts of felony firearm, felon in possession of a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 13, 2026 by Judge Paul J. Bridenstine.
He was arrested in Georgia four days after the shooting and later extradited to Michigan.
