PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage city council will consider a major update of its zoning ordinances this week, to bring them up to modern standards, clarify some sections, and make other rules and regulations more flexible to meet current market demands.
All of the changes are in line with the city’s Master Plan.
Councilmember Chris Burns says he expects a robust discussion on the changes, including language on zoning the parks that might suggest they could be developed.
He says that is not the case.
He says the City Charter requires a supermajority of both the council and the public to sell any park or green spaces in the city.
Burns has also heard concerns that the changes will mean more affordable housing can be constructed, and says there is a difference between “affordable” and “low income.”
The changes do allow more flexibility in the type of subdivision design and the types of unit configurations, in keeping with changing market conditions.
It’s on the agenda at the meeting starting at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.
