KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With the National Weather Service predicting the Kalamazoo area will experience extreme heat Wednesday, city officials are gearing up with cooling shelters, colling centers, and public hydration stations.
The most current predictions call for the temperature to rise from 80 degrees in the late morning to a high of 90 degrees by 4:00 p.m. With forecasted humidity of 60 percent during the late afternoon, the heat index should be approximately 100 degrees. The temperature will drop back down to around 80 degrees by 10:00 p.m. and into the mid 70’s by midnight.
For individuals who do not have access to a cool location, the following cooling shelters and cooling centers will be available during their listed hours of operation.

Fire Hydrants Open for Cooling
When the heat index reaches 100 degrees, the City of Kalamazoo strategically opens twelve designated fire hydrants to provide additional relief for residents. For safety reasons, residents
should never attempt to open a fire hydrant themselves. Unauthorized operation can negatively affect water pressure throughout the system, potentially compromising firefighting efforts and
public safety during an emergency. The following hydrants will be open and available tomorrow:
